What is a CuriosiTrip?

A CuriosiTrip is an exploratory travel experience that focuses on curiosity leading the way.

We have mapped out itineraries that maximize our time soaking up some of Mexico City’s off-the-beaten-track neighborhoods, immersing ourselves in local culture, sampling unique foods and beverages, and being open to serendipity. As such, we will not adhere to a rigorous “see everything” schedule.

Here are some of the highlights:

Colonias

Mexico City is made up of its “colonias,” or neighborhoods. We will be making excursions to a few of the lesser visited yet vibrant ones.

Comida

What’s a trip to Mexico without indulging in the food scene? We will let our palates savor the delectable flavors found only in the side streets of CDMX.

Cultura

Expect to connect with the diverse culture of Mexico City, from pre-Hispanic beverages to the one-of-a-kind Mexican wrestling match.

Discover the Unexpected: Step away from the usual and immerse yourself in the hidden layers of Mexico City, where history and modern life blend in ways few choose to see.

A Sensory Journey: Taste, touch, see, and hear the city like a local. From under-the-radar eateries to architectural gems, each day will reveal something new that’s waiting to be discovered.

Meaningful Connections: Join a group of like-minded explorers who are ready to embrace the unknown and see one of the world’s most vibrant cities as a true curious traveler would. Share experiences, stories, and maybe even forge lifelong friendships along the way.

What to Expect:

  • Curated Activities: Enjoy thoughtfully selected experiences that reveal the rich tapestry of Mexico City’s culture, history, and culinary delights.
  • Local Flavors: Savor meals that introduce you to the true tastes of Mexico that you won’t find in tourist spots.
  • Free Exploration: Curated activities are balanced with free time, giving you the chance to follow your curiosity and see where it leads.
  • Optional Challenges: Ready to step outside your comfort zone? Participate in challenges designed to spark creativity and deepen your experience.
  • Community-Building: This journey is about more than just sights—it’s about building a community of curious souls who share a passion for exploration.

What’s Included:

  • Selected meals and beverages that highlight local cuisine
  • Entry to special events and ticketed experiences
  • Public transportation for group activities
  • Suggested itineraries and sightseeing options for free time
  • Tailored sights and venues curated by an experienced traveler
  • Pre-trip correspondence with other attendees

What’s Not Included:

  • Airfare
  • Accommodation
  • Travel insurance
  • Meals and beverages not provided
  • Non-public transportation and rides to/from airport
  • Ticketed entry and other costs not specifically indicated

At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.” ~Frida Kahlo

Accommodation isn’t included to allow for varying budget styles and to keep costs reasonable for you. We’ll recommend the optimal neighborhoods to stay in that offer a more authentic CDMX experience, ensuring you’re well-placed to explore both with the group and on your own.

CURIOSITRIP SCHEDULE*

*Since curiosity determines our exact agenda, this schedule is subject to WILL change! Please be willing and ready to be flexible.

Curious travelers are either already in Mexico getting a head start on all the things, or will be arriving no later than 9:00 AM this morning.

2:00 PM Mexico City Time – We will gather at a meeting point in the historic center to hit the ground running with our exploration.

After strolling through Mexico City’s colorful Chinatown, we’ll stop at one of the city’s more interesting markets. There you will have the chance to test your curiosity by trying some unusual snacks that might be difficult to swallow, but will make for a fun story or social media post!

If you fancy some authentic handmade crafts, you’ll have a chance to shop or just browse at an artisanal market until we find our hidden happy hour spot where we can sample a variety of unique types of mezcal, rich coffee, or Mexican chocolate.

Then we’ll mosey through a bohemian neighborhood on the way to our welcome dinner spot for the evening. There you’ll have a plethora of food options as well as some of the most creative drinks in all of Mexico City.

You’ll want to fill up on breakfast at a nearby cafe beforehand but save room for dessert because our day officially starts with a chocolate-themed experience that is sure to be a highlight of the trip.

In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to sightsee places near the historic center or elsewhere, OR you can tighten your walking shoes and join us as we make our way through the back streets of the popular Roma Norte neighborhood. Perhaps we’ll eat some tacos and people-watch from the many area parks.

We’ll have to make some timely choices in the late afternoon: explore more markets, nibble on street food, or dive head first into a locally popular pulquería to sample pulque—a pre-Hispanic drink that’s all the rage in Mexico these days.

The group will reconvene to attend a spectacular cultural phenomenon that will be sure to leave an impression on you!

After breakfast on your own, grab your Metro card that you received on Day 1 and we’ll meet up for another big day ahead of us.

We’re going to act like we live here and take public transportation to one of the world’s most visited pilgrimage sites. After taking in the spiritual energy of the place, we’ll find some lunch on our way to the next stop.

Hope you’re not afraid of heights, because we’ll be seeing Mexico City from above as we ride one of the city’s three Cablebus lines.

We’ll check out a monument to the Mexican Revolution before walking through an eclectic neighborhood to enjoy a birria dinner surrounded by rousing mariachi music.

Jump into the day by joining the denizens of Mexico City as they partake in the “El Paseo Dominical,” a weekly event that will give you a different perspective of the city. You might even burn a few of the calories from the last few days worth of indulging.

If you’re exhausted or that’s not your speed, feel free to sleep in, have a leisurely brunch, or maybe you planned ahead and snagged tickets to the Frida Kahlo Museum. We meet up again as a group in one of the city’s most charming neighborhoods: Coyoacán.

After a cup of delectable cafe de olla, we’ll go on a mural walk throughout the quaint alleyways and streets of Coyoacán.

We’ll unwind and wet our whistles with a game of Mexican billiards and a cold cerveza before savoring another delicious meal or heading back for an early night.

Today is a special day! We’ll gather together as a group to visit 15th century Aztec ruins that carry secrets both ancient and modern.

If we’re lucky, we’ll catch a mariachi performance and a shot of tequila at Plaza Garibaldi before aiming to reach one of the city’s tallest buildings for a sunset view.

The day will conclude with a group farewell dinner where you can feast on an array of delicious Mexican foods while we talk about our favorite parts of the trip.

But wait, it’s not over yet!

We’ll have a goodbye breakfast in the morning and then set out to visit an eclectic art museum that is stunning both artistically and architecturally.

Continue exploring as we walk through the Polanco neighborhood, grab some lunch, and decide whether to get lost in the Bosque de Chapultepec, delve into Mexico’s history at the Museo Nacional de Antropología, or disperse for some last-minute sightseeing of our own.

This group trip has officially come to an end, but don’t be sad! Be grateful for our time together and remember, it’s hasta luego and not adios.

Extend your trip on your own or with a new friend and explore more of Mexico City and beyond, or return home until the next trip.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The official kickoff event will be at 2:00 PM local time on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Be sure that you arrive with enough time to settle in, grab some food, and come prepared to mingle and start our CuriosiTrip.

We recommend arriving the night before to avoid potential complications. If that isn’t possible, we suggest a schedule that has you landing in Mexico City no later than 9:00 AM local time. Mexico City follows Central Standard Time, which is one hour behind New York or two hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Of course, it is highly encouraged that you consider adding more time to your Mexico trip, whether it is before and/or after our CuriosiTrip.

We are seeing some of less-touristy sides of the city, and while there will be a little free time to check out the popular attractions in the city center, we hope you will take your time and explore more of what this magnificent city has to offer.

In order to maximize our experience and accommodate a variety of budgets and travel styles, this CuriosiTrip will not include lodging.

However, we will provide suggested neighborhoods to stay in and a few options of lodging types for your consideration.

We have put together a lodging and transportation guide to assist you in finding lodging that suits your budgetary needs while being in the proximity of where the group members will stay.

Check out this resources page for an interactive map as well as a few suggestions to start your searching.

The daily schedule will be tailored with a mind towards the composition and interests of the participants. As such, a detailed itinerary cannot be posted here.

However, participants who sign up will receive access to an exclusive WhatsApp group where they can ask questions, get to know each other, suggest places of interest, share travel tips, and much, much more.

Additionally, we are open to hosting a forum to address questions, discuss itinerary options, and do our best to ensure that everyone is prepared for the trip. This may be in the form of an Instagram Live, a group video chat, or a 1:1 call…or all of the above!

Yes, unfortunately the tap water in Mexico City is not considered safe for most travelers to drink directly. We recommend a water filter such as the SteriPen or LifeStraw to help reduce plastic waste.

Some accommodations and restaurants may offer bottled or filtered water for free or for a minimal charge. A variety of bottled waters and beverages are plentiful and affordable.

You may wish to pack extra hydration packets such as Liquid IV to help keep you hydrated on the go.

You may have heard that many places in Mexico (and in several foreign countries) do not allow you to throw used toilet paper into the toilet. While this may be revolting or confusing, it is the reality for the residents.

Plumbing systems in much of the developing world are not as strong as those found in “western” countries. Even a few plies of paper can clog up an entire neighborhood.

We respect the realities of places we travel, so please be sure to dispose of toilet paper, hygiene products, and other “flushable” items properly in a trash bin. Every place has a receptacle, usually next to the toilet.

When there is no sign or it’s otherwise unclear, assume you must use the trash. Accidents can happen, but please always remember to follow this rule as strictly as possible. We do not want you to be “that” person!

The best way to explore a city is to walk…a lot! While we will be stopping several times, there may not always be a place to sit down or rest. However, we’ll do our best to minimize walking while maximizing our curiosity.

A good rule of thumb is to expect 10,000 to 15,000 steps on average per day. Be prepared to be outside and moving for several hours each day. Wear sunscreen and a hat, and always wear sturdy walking shoes. (Please, no Crocs or flip-flops!)

If you have mobility issues or do not think you will be able to walk as much but still want to go, you may opt to take transportation to and from specific destinations. Of course, we may opt as a group to call a few Ubers to save time or avoid long stretches of walking.

Our time together is short. Be sure to build in some time to rest after the trip.

We have prepared a thorough guide to public transportation and ride sharing that can be found along with suggested lodging guidance in a resources page here.

This trip is designed to allow you some free time to explore a little outside of our group, or with a new friend. Of course, you are not obligated to attend every activity if you would prefer to explore on your own.

Friday and Sunday will have the most free time, but you should have an hour or so each morning and evening for yourself, if not more.

We will have a better idea of specific timing as the trip gets closer and people sign up. The flow of the trip will be dependent on who is coming and what kinds of experiences we have. We want to be open to serendipity at all times.

We firmly believe that age ain’t nothing but a number! That said, it is not designed for children or minors.

You should have some level of maturity and travel expertise to be able to respect cultural differences and norms. We will not be partying all day, nor will we be sitting around.

The estimated age range is 35-75, but any age is welcome as long as you are able to know your limits.

As mentioned above, the best way to experience this trip will be to be as mobile as possible. Solo travelers, couples, friend groups, and parents of adults are all acceptable!

Other than safety, which has dramatically improved, there are a few minor precautions that will help make your trip as trouble-free as possible. I’ve already mentioned the water above.

As with any trip, including domestically, you may experience a stomach bug or even diarrhea. We’ve found that activated charcoal supplements are very helpful at absorbing toxins and helping to minimize stomach issues. We also use ginger products, such as chews and/or essential oils that contain ginger. You should also consider things like loperamide (Imodium), bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), simethicone (Gas-X), and any vitamins or supplements you take regularly.

Mexico City’s altitude is about 7,350 feet (2,240 meters). For most people coming from North America, this is quite high and could cause some discomfort. If you are prone to altitude sickness or aren’t sure how it might affect you, consult with your doctor or naturopath on preventive measures and possible approaches. Here is an online resource for some basic information about altitude sickness.

We will be outside a lot, and the sun can be strong. Bring sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher, and a hat.

Insect repellent is a good idea to battle against mosquitoes.

Pharmacies are plentiful in Mexico City, but you may want to bring some over-the-counter cold medicine, allergy pills, or cough drops just to have. As much as I hate to say it, COVID is still around too. Good travel insurance will cover these things should you come down with something before or during your trip.

Keep in mind, we have no medical credentials. These are just typical suggestions for Mexico City. It’s quite likely that one of us will get sick in some way. It’s the law of averages in a place where we aren’t used to the food or drink. Do your best to prepare and then deal with the consequences as needed. It’s just part of travel!

Ticket sales will likely end sometime before the end of 2025.

The early bird pricing may only be available for a limited time. If you have any concerns about pricing, please feel free to contact us directly.

Unfortunately, tickets are non-refundable so please be sure you can join us when you sign up.

Things can happen. We are requiring travel insurance to protect YOU. We have heard too many stories of travel mishaps that ended up costing thousands of dollars when insurance would have covered everything. Personally experience has also shown that having good coverage can pay off.

We’ve had good results with Allianz, which is why we’ve partnered with them. We get an annual plan with a level of coverage that matches our frequent travel habits.

For other options, you can check out Insure My Trip, which allows you to compare coverage from different insurers.

You will be required to show your coverage details to us when we meet in Mexico City. If you have any questions or concerns about this requirement, please contact us directly.

Yes, you are still welcome to join us! We strongly encourage you to get WhatsApp, as we will have a group chat that will enable us to communicate with each other, changes, meeting points, etc.

Due to the nature of the trip, the itinerary may change frequently and we want you to be informed. There will still be time to unplug and be present on the trip.
