What is a CuriosiTrip?

A CuriosiTrip is an exploratory travel experience that focuses on curiosity leading the way.

We have mapped out itineraries that maximize our time soaking up some of Mexico City’s off-the-beaten-track neighborhoods, immersing ourselves in local culture, sampling unique foods and beverages, and being open to serendipity. As such, we will not adhere to a rigorous “see everything” schedule.

Here are some of the highlights:

Colonias

Mexico City is made up of its “colonias,” or neighborhoods. We will be making excursions to a few of the lesser visited yet vibrant ones.

Comida

What’s a trip to Mexico without indulging in the food scene? We will let our palates savor the delectable flavors found only in the side streets of CDMX.

Cultura

Expect to connect with the diverse culture of Mexico City, from pre-Hispanic beverages to the one-of-a-kind Mexican wrestling match.

Accommodation isn’t included to allow for varying budget styles and to keep costs reasonable for you. We’ll recommend the optimal neighborhoods to stay in that offer a more authentic CDMX experience, ensuring you’re well-placed to explore both with the group and on your own.

CURIOSITRIP SCHEDULE*

*Since curiosity determines our exact agenda, this schedule is subject to WILL change! Please be willing and ready to be flexible.

Curious travelers are either already in Mexico getting a head start on all the things, or will be arriving no later than today.

4:00 PM Mexico City Time – We will gather for a welcome happy hour and get to know each other over some mezcal, rich coffee, or Mexican chocolate.

We’ll mosey through a nearby market before walking to our welcome dinner spot for the evening.

We will start our day with a chocolate-themed experience or two, followed by an excursion to one of the city’s most bizarre markets. There you will have the chance to try some unusual snacks that might be challenging but will make for great stories!

You will have free time to explore the historic center, where you can choose between the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Alameda Park, and the Casa de los Azulejos or the Zócalo, Templo Mayor, and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Perhaps you will stop at one of the many tantalizing bakeries for a sweet treat. The city’s oldest bakery is just blocks away.

We’ll reconvene at a locally popular pulqueria to sample pulque–a pre-Hispanic drink that’s all the rage in Mexico these days.

Then we will attend a spectacular cultural phenomenon that will be sure to leave an impression on you!

After breakfast, we’ll stroll to a nearby vibrant neighborhood that few tourists visit. Here we will let our curiosity take over and lead us through the day.

Possibilities include visiting an historic church, a cavernous library, a beautiful park with a centerpiece from a World’s Fair, and an authentic local market.

Maybe after another round of pulque, we’ll visit a local craft brewery before enjoying a birria dinner surrounded by rousing mariachi music.

Start your day by joining the denizens of Mexico City as they partake in the “El Paseo Dominical,” a weekly cycling event that will give you a different perspective of the city.

We’ll gather together as a group to visit 15th century Aztec ruins that carry secrets both ancient and modern.

Aiming to reach one of the city’s tallest buildings for a sunset view, we may be distracted by local markets or a shot of tequila.

The day will conclude with a group farewell dinner where you can feast on an array of delicious Mexican foods while we talk about our favorite parts of the trip.

This group trip has officially come to an end. But don’t be sad! Be grateful for our time together and remember, it’s “hasta luego” and not “adios.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The official kickoff event will be at 4:00 PM local time on Thursday, January 16, 2025. Be sure that you arrive with enough time to settle in and come prepared to mingle and start our CuriosiTrip.

We suggest a schedule that has you landing in Mexico City no later than 12:00 PM noon local time. Mexico City follows Central Standard Time, which is one hour behind New York or two hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Of course, it is highly encouraged that you consider adding more time to your Mexico trip, whether it is before and/or after our CuriosiTrip.

We are mainly seeing the less-touristy side of the city, and while there will be some free time to check out the popular attractions in the city center, we hope you will take your time and explore more of what this magnificent city has to offer.

In order to maximize our experience and accommodate a variety of budgets and travel styles, this CuriosiTrip will not include lodging.

However, we will provide suggested neighborhoods to stay in and a few options of lodging types for your consideration.

Yes, unfortunately the tap water in Mexico City is not considered safe for most travelers to drink directly. We recommend a water filter such as the SteriPen or LifeStraw to help reduce plastic waste.

Some accommodations and restaurants may offer bottled or filtered water for free or for a minimal charge. A variety of bottled waters and beverages are plentiful and affordable.

You may wish to pack extra hydration packets such as Liquid IV to help keep you hydrated on the go.

The daily schedule will be tailored with a mind towards the composition and interests of the participants. As such, a detailed itinerary cannot be posted here.

However, participants who sign up will receive access to an exclusive WhatsApp group where they can ask questions, get to know each other, suggest places of interest, share travel tips, and much, much more.

Additionally, we will have pre-trip video “discovery calls” to address questions, discuss itinerary options, and do our best to ensure that everyone is prepared for the trip.

The best way to explore a city is to walk…a lot! While we will be stopping several times, there may not always be a place to sit down or rest. However, we’ll do our best to minimize walking while maximizing our curiosity.

A good rule of thumb is to expect 8,000 to 15,000 steps on average. Be prepared to be outside and moving for several hours each day. Wear sunscreen and a hat, and always wear sturdy walking shoes. (Please, no Crocs or flip-flops!)

If you have mobility issues or do not think you will be able to walk as much but still want to go, you may opt to take transportation to and from specific destinations. Of course, we may opt as a group to call a few Ubers to save time or avoid long stretches of walking.

Our time together is short. Be sure to build in some time to rest after the trip.

This trip is designed to allow you some free time to explore a little outside of our group, or with a new friend. Of course, you are not obligated to attend every activity if you would prefer to explore on your own. For the three full days, you will have at least 2-3 hours each day to yourself, if not more.

We will have a better idea of specific timing as the trip gets closer and people sign up. The flow of the trip will be dependent on who is coming and what kinds of experiences we have. We want to be open to serendipity at all times.

We firmly believe that age ain’t nothing but a number! That said, it is not designed for children or minors. You should have some level of maturity and travel expertise to be able to respect cultural differences and norms. We will not be partying all day, nor will we be sitting around. The estimated age range is 35-75, but any age is welcome as long as you are able to know your limits. As mentioned above, the best way to experience this trip will be to be as mobile as possible. Solo travelers, couples, friend groups, and parents of adults are all acceptable!

Other than safety, which has dramatically improved, there are a few minor precautions that will help make your trip as trouble-free as possible. I’ve already mentioned the water above.

As with any trip, including domestically, you may experience a stomach bug or even diarrhea. We’ve found that activated charcoal supplements are very helpful at absorbing toxins and helping to minimize stomach issues. We also use ginger products, such as chews and/or essential oils that contain ginger. You should also consider things like loperamide (Imodium), bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), simethicone (Gas-X), and any vitamins or supplements you take regularly.

Mexico City’s altitude is about 7,350 feet (2,240 meters). For most people coming from North America, this is quite high and could cause some discomfort. If you are prone to altitude sickness or aren’t sure how it might affect you, consult with your doctor or naturopath on preventive measures and possible approaches. Here is an online resource for some basic information about altitude sickness.

We will be outside a lot, and the sun can be strong. Bring sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher, and a hat.

Insect repellent is a good idea to battle against mosquitoes.

Pharmacies are plentiful in Mexico City, but you may want to bring some over-the-counter cold medicine, allergy pills, or cough drops just to have. As much as I hate to say it, COVID is still around too. Good travel insurance will cover these things should you come down with something before or during your trip.

Keep in mind, we have no medical credentials. These are just typical suggestions for Mexico City. It’s quite likely that one of us will get sick in some way. It’s the law of averages in a place where we aren’t used to the food or drink. Do your best to prepare and then deal with the consequences as needed. It’s just part of travel!

The exact date should be posted closer to the time of the trip, but ticket sales will likely end sometime before the end of 2024.

Things can happen. We are requiring travel insurance to protect YOU. We have heard too many stories of travel mishaps that ended up costing thousands of dollars when insurance would have covered everything. Personally experience has also shown that having good coverage can pay off.

We’ve had good results with Allianz, which is why we’ve partnered with them. We get an annual plan with a level of coverage that matches our frequent travel habits. For other options, you can check out Insure My Trip, which allows you to compare coverage from different insurers.

You will be required to show your coverage details to us when we meet in Mexico City.

Yes, you are still welcome to join us! We encourage you to get WhatsApp, as we will have a group chat that will enable us to communicate with each other, changes, meeting points, etc. Due to the nature of the trip, the itinerary may change frequently and we want you to be informed. There will still be time to unplug and be present on the trip.
